What to Expect Post Total Knee Replacement

Dr. Tyler Bron outlines key expectations and guidelines for recovery following total knee replacement surgery at Colorado Springs Orthopaedic Group.

Immediate Post-Op & Early Hospital Phase

  • Early Mobilization: Patients are encouraged to stand and walk short distances with the assistance of physical therapy on the day of surgery to prevent blood clots and jumpstart joint mobility.
  • Pain Management: Utilizes multimodal pain protocols, including targeted nerve blocks and oral medications, to minimize reliance on heavy opioids and control postoperative discomfort.

Recovery Timeline & Milestones

  • Weeks 1–3 (Initial Healing): Focuses on wound care, reducing swelling with ice and elevation, and completing home exercises to restore early joint flexion and extension. Assistive devices like walkers or crutches are typically used.
  • Weeks 4–6 (Gaining Independence): Most patients transition off assistive devices to unassisted walking, resume driving (once cleared and off narcotic pain meds), and return to light daily tasks.
  • Months 3–12 (Full Rehabilitation): Continuous improvement in joint strength, endurance, and range of motion. Patients can safely return to low-impact sports such as cycling, swimming, and hiking.
